Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state has attributed backward trend in education to lack of professional teachers even as he promised to improve their welfare.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Dr Mannasah Daniel stated this at an opening of a workshop organized by US Embassy to train teachers in the state.
Governor Yahaya said his administration has resolved to remind teachers of their primary role.
“we want to remind teachers what they might have forgotten. We also want to give them motivation and that the teaching profession is not the least profession, because if you see boys and you ask where are you working they will say, ‘I am just managing to teach,’ which means you have underrated that profession.” Yahaya said.
He explained the state government is upgrading the Education Resource Centre for more inclusion of people willing to learn.
The Governor pledged to support anyone that is out to enhance education in the state, making it the second top priority area in the administration after healthcare.
He also promised to improve the welfare of teachers in the state, with a view to enhance their productivity.
The Permanent Secretary, Gombe State Ministry of Education, Alhaji Sule Bappaji, said the theme of the training, “Promoting Teaching Excellence and Achievements,” had been carefully chosen to reflect the role and expectations of teachers in addressing all forms of nonchalant attitudes of students towards learning.
