Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state has commissioned 50 brand new Toyota medium roof fully air-conditioned buses for Gombe State Transport Service, with a resolve to restore the lost glory of the company and facilitate easier interstate movement of goods and services.
Performing the commissioning ceremony at the Gombe Line Terminus in Gombe, Governor Yahaya said his objective is to reposition Gombe Line into a commercially viable transport company that provides affordable and reliable transport alternatives to the people and increase revenue base of the state.
He said Government will continue to put in place sound corporate governance policies and practices that will enhance transparency, accountability and profitability.
"Our decision to invest in Gombe Line is not a coincidence. It is borne out of our carefully planned commitment to invest in projects that bring immediate benefits to the people of our State. From water supply to township and rural roads, fertilizer distribution to youth empowerment, our administration has over the past six months demonstrated its readiness to fulfil our campaign promises despite existing financial challenges".
The Governor said the company is expected to be a commercially viable entity, warning that the old culture of waste and inefficiency is now over.
He also warned against fraud and financial recklessness, saying revenues generated from the service and operations of the transport company must be properly utilized and accounted for.
Earlier, the Managing Director of Gombe Line Transport Service, Umar Chiroma Abdussalam assured of his management's stance on prudence, accountability and proper maintenance of the vehicles in line with the Governor's directive.
He also thanked the Governor for directing that all passengers on board Gombe line be served light refreshments during journeys.
The commissioning ceremony was witnessed by the Emir of Gombe and Chairman of Gombe state council of Emirs and Chiefs, other traditional rulers and top Government functionaries.
